I see ways a WW1 total war game could be great but they would have to change the way combat works for it to be believable. Please don't suggest a WW1 game with armies trying to outmanouver each other, that's not how the war was largely fought (deceiving the other side into thinking your army is in one place but actually it's in another sector is about as much manouvering as you could do). Armies really wouldn't be attacking each other in the open field but instead you could Garrison armies into sectors and initiate combat in said sectors to slowly gain control of them. Could still have "provinces" but call them sectors or something. If combat revolved around attacking and defending trenches I think that could be done. The mobile combat part of the war was only really during the first year or so until the combatants started digging trenches. When people think of WW1 they rightfully think of trench warfare. The fictional version of the 3K era is the most popular and widely portrayed "version" of that particular era.

I know the vast majority of mods are free, but I don’t like this attitude where people don’t criticize them because of that. Just doing standard Napoleon tactics of flanking the enemy is enough to beat most armies, until of course you reach those bunkers.
Tanks are kind of there, but you’ll probably never recruit them since as is the games easy enough. The “trenches” are just the barricades from Empire and so clearly don’t function like what trenches should function like. Ships are hardcoded, so you don’t get fancy ship models. Secondly, the engine is too limited for WWI. This may sound like a minor issue but going up against Italy who built a ton of these was almost unbearable and made some battles anywhere between unplayable and incredibly tedious. Still it did morale damage and they would run away. Even worse the bunker would ‘fire’ on them, even though since it wasn’t facing them it didn’t do any damage. The only way I could find to beat them was to sneak troops behind them and assault them in melee, which is kind of awkward, but then they do that classic empire surrounding the enemy in a perfect circle. The worst were the concrete machine gun nests which didn’t move and were invincible to artillery fire. No offense to the creators, they clearly put a lot of effort into it and the models are great but it has a lot of problems.
